Beloved though they may be, rewatching Tim Burton's Batman movies 30 years after their release highlights a handful of unpleasant truths.

The popularity of Tim Burton's Batman movies may have endured for over three decades, but that doesn't mean that there aren't a few harsh truths on display when rewatching them 30 years later. 1989 saw the release of Tim Burton's Batman, introducing Michael Keaton's iteration of the Caped Crusader to the world as he faces off against his arch-nemesis, the Joker.

10 Burton’s Supporting Characters Are A Little TOO Weird As iconic a character as Batman may be, he's only as good as his supporting characters. Burton's takes on the likes of Catwoman, Penguin, and Commissioner Gordon are very much in line with the director's trademarked style, but that quirkiness has lost its charm three decades on. Penguin is a sewer-dwelling raw fish enthusiast, and Catwoman has been gifted with the superhuman power to return from the dead.

7 Murder Just Doesn’t Suit Batman Though Batman sometimes does more harm than good, he's undeniably a hero, thanks in part to his "no-kill" rule. Most iterations of the Caped Crusader take a solemn vow never to actively take a life, and it's a well-established part of the character's mythos. However, Burton opted to forgo that idea, instead choosing to have his version of Batman kill petty criminals and archenemies alike.

4 Aspects Of Burton’s Stories Haven’t Aged Well At All Considering the 30 years since their release, it's hardly surprising that elements of Burton's Batman movies haven't aged well. However, watching them with modern sensibilities highlights a few issues with their stories that are hard to ignore. There's a clear absence of significant female characters, with the only real exception being Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, who is arguably over-sexualized throughout.
