There are plenty of Halloween movies that are great for kids, with eerie moments and spine-tingling scenes that captivate audiences of all ages.
People love to watch scary and spooky fare around Halloween, and that goes for viewers of all ages as parents seek out movies that get their kids into the spirit, too. This makes sense since most of Halloween's tricks and treats are geared toward a younger crowd. However, the horror genre is jam-packed with movies that are heavy on mature themes and graphic violence, which makes finding child-appropriate Halloween content a tall order.
The Nightmare Before Christmas's horrendous creatures and gloomy setting play a huge role in its ominous tone. Its iconic character designs were inspired by urban legends and monsters throughout horror lore, with the most terrifying of all being the bug-filled Oogie Boogie. Ken Page's eerie rendition of "Oogie Boogie's Song" is one of the most terrifying moments in the film.
Moments before her escape, Coraline's Other Mother transforms into a spider-like being and chases the girl through a tunnel that leads to her real home. As Coraline runs through, the tunnel shrinks to a close in hopes of forever trapping her in The Other Mothers' sadistic alternate dimension. As the shrieks and screams of The Other Mother echo throughout the portal, the movie quickens the heart rate of children and adults alike.
As lighthearted as the film is, it's not without its creepy moments, most notably Mavis's visit to the human town. To deter his kind-hearted daughter from befriending humans, Dracula stages an angry mob to chase Mavis away. During the scene, one man loses his head, another person's head is skewered with a pitchfork, and worst of all, the townspeople are all engulfed in flames. This sadistic scene provides a shift in tone that surely contributed to Hotel Transylvania's PG rating.
One of its most bone-chilling moments has to be the play put on by Wednesday and Pugsley. During the gruesome scene, which is performed at an elementary school, the Addams kids hack away at each other with swords, dismembering fake limbs, and splattering gallons of fake blood all over the stage and audience. The scene is shockingly hilarious and will forever be burned in the memory of anyone who watches it.
