Christopher Nolan was once attached to a movie remake of an iconic, endlessly influential TV series, but it is a good thing that this never happened.
While Christopher Nolan once wanted to remake a cult classic ‘60s series, this costly movie mistake could have sent back his career. Christopher Nolan’s filmography is more diverse than some of his detractors give him credit for. While the director might be best known for cerebral sci-fi projects like Interstellar, Tenet, and Inception , these are not the only projects that the helmer has worked on.
Nolan Couldn't Have Recreated The Prisoner's 1960s Appeal The influence of The Prisoner might still be felt in movies and television shows to this day but this does not change the fact that the original series was very much a product of its time. The Prisoner embodied the trippy, surreal aesthetic of the swinging sixties to an absurd degree. Because of this, any attempt to modernize this style would have fallen flat.
Nolan's Filmmaking Style Didn't Suit The Prisoner At face value, Nolan seems ideal due to The Prisoner's core themes of mystery and identity. However, Nolan also likes doing his own thing, which would mean stripping down much of what made The Prisoner great. Nolan's ambitious filmmaking techniques are arguably also not really what The Prisoner would need, since the claustrophobia of the original series was exacerbated by its straightforward shooting style.
